Sapporo White Illumination & Munich Christmas Market in Odori Park

Started in 1981, Sapporo White Illumination is a big event which heralds the coming of the snow season in the capital city of Hokkaido. The street from Sapporo Station to Susukino and trees and objects in OdoriParkare lit up with 400,000 light bulbs from late November to the New Year holidays. To save energy, nowadays many light bulbshave been replaced by LED, light-emitting-diode.

As we have Sapporo Snow Festival in February in Odori Park, the lighting objects placed there will be replaced by huge snow statues. However, the lights on trees along Sapporo Station Street will be lit till the end of the Snow Festival.

Sapporo White Illumination features romantic, artistic collaboration of nature and light after dark in the northern region. It looks especially fantastic and mysterious when it is snowing. We recommend you to view the whole shining venue from the observatory of the Sapporo TV Tower.

During Sapporo White Illumination, OdoriParkis also the site for Munich Christmas Market from late November to December 24th.In 2002 the event was established to commemorate the 30th anniversary of sister-city affiliation between Sapporoand Munich. Since then, it has been another special attraction of winter held in OdoriPark. At the market, you can find many traditional Christmas ornaments, crafts, and a host of other lovely goods. And you can also enjoy delicious Gluhwein, hot wine from Munich, and real German dishes at the stands. If you are lucky, you may even see Santa Claus there!
